Fence Beautification Project
Installation date: Begun 12/4/11
Location: Corner of Pikes Peak and Colbrunn Ct in Old Colorado City.
Concept: I was invited to yarn bomb this fence by some of the artists at Second Floor Studios. I wanted to play with the paint mixing techniques that I started in the Bike Rack Cozy (below) while keeping the individual pieces portable, quick, and still challenging.
Additional sections of the fence were bedecked February 2, 2012. You can see an interview that was done by a local TV station at this link: http://www.koaa.com/videos/video-tape-art/ and a tour of the project at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yqp8RaltfVc&feature=share. The project is scheduled to come down on May 1, 2012.
UPDATE: This project will be staying in place until July 2012.
Video tapes used included:
A Fish Called Wanda, Ansel Adams, Biblical End Times, Dad's Army (2 tapes), Drug Abuse Resistance Education, Muppets Tonight, My Cousin Vinnie, Quilts of Wisconsin, Rising Damp, Sanford and Son, Shakespeare in Love, Singin' In the Rain, The Darling Buds of May (2 tapes), The Hunt for Red October, The Kiss of the Spider Woman, Three Stooges (4 tapes), Time Slip Part 1, To Kill a Mockingbird, Unforgiven, Untitled

Project #13: Big Bike Rack Cozy
Installed 7/9/11
Location: Bemis School of Art, 818 Pelham Pl., Colorado Springs, CO
Concept: I've put two smaller bombs on this bike rack so far this year and they've both disappeared. So I figured that it's be harder to get away with removing it if I covered the whole thing. 20' of ribbing and cables, intersperced with a few other distraction projects can be a long project. I've been working on this on and off for about 4 months.
I sometimes teach kids art classes here and use the color wheel a lot. The progression of colors in this piece is reminiscent of that tool.
Video tapes used include: "Cubs Baseball", "Michael", "D2", "Sanford and Son", "Marked for Death", "I Love Lucy", "Most Wanted", "Donnie Brasco", and "Disclosure".

Project #12: Stop Sign Bling
Installed 1/17/11
Location: stop sign just west of Union on Constitution, Colorado Springs, CO
Concept: I blame Streetcolor*. I'm giddy about their ruffles and have been trying to add them to my pieces. This became a slight ruffle-fest and fit perfectly onto this stop sign.
*(Streetcolor: http://streetcolor.wordpress.com/feed/)
Update: this piece is still up and has been adopted by a nearby resident. Thanks Rebecca!

Project #11: Decommissioned Bus Shelter
Installed 1/17/11
Location: bus shelter near the intersection of Van Buren and Union, Colorado Springs, CO
Concept: I made this piece on a whim to play with knitted ruffle techniques. I tried a couple times to put it out but it didn't seem to fit any of the locations I tested it on. Then I got to thinking about the bus shelter down the street. Due to last year's budget cutbacks it was not being used and I thought it might want a bit of attention. The green ruffles fit perfectly, blend in subtly with the green of the bench and were enjoyed by the kids playing hide and seek on a school holiday.
Update: missing, assumed removed, by the end of January.

Project #10: Bemis Bike Rack Bomb
Installed 1/5/11
Location: Bemis School of Art, 818 Pelham Pl., Colorado Springs, CO
Concept: I've been wanting to bomb a bike rack for a while. The idea of hitting two in one day appealed to me.
Update: Reported missing 1/19/2011

Project #9: Wooglin's Deli Bike Rack Bomb
Installed 1/5/11
Location: On the sidewalk in front of Wooglin's Deli, 823 N. Tejon St., Colorado Springs, CO
Video Tapes Used: I'm not sure at this point
Concept: A while back I was playing with a domino knitting pattern and had a strip of these with nowhere to go. So I added some color and gave them a home.

Project #8: Don't Hit Me!
Installed 1/5/11
Location: Parking lot of Bemis School of Art, 818 Pelham Pl., Colorado Springs, CO
Video tapes used: "Ted Ambulance Calls," "A&E: Cops or Criminals," "K-9," "Pacific Heights," "Lethal Weapon," "Death Becomes Her," "ER," "Driving Miss Daisy," "The Chase," "Campion--Death of a Ghost," "Perry Mason"
Concept: This is the light pole with the most damage from cars hitting it. I wanted to create a piece for this pole that would be very visible while cushioning cars from the cement of the lamp post base. Each stripe can be replaced without removing the whole piece. Each stripe has a different ruffle pattern.

Project #7: Itchy Fingers
Installed 12/28/10
Location: on the corner of E. Van Buren and Logan St, Colorado Springs, CO
Video tapes used: Muppet Show
Concept: I've been working on a larger project and waiting for warmer weather after the holidays to install it. This little bit of a project was created to tide me over until I got to the larger one.
Update: removed due to poor condition and replaced on 3/1/11.

Project #3 and Ongoing: Lace over the Creek
Installed 8/19/10, amended 9/17/10, 9/24/10, 10/25/10, 12/20/10
Location: bridge railing over Fountain Creek near Lovers Lane, Manitou Springs, Co
Video tape used: "Queen: We Will Rock You", "Ghost", "Death Becomes Her"
Not sure there's really a concept. I wanted to play with an eyelet lace stitch and wanted to make a piece for this railing, so the two wants converged. The colors on this section are intentionally dark to show off the shiny silver patina in the metal rail. The railing in the center section has been worn down to a smooth silvery color, which is why I wanted to do a lace pattern.
This project is my lace sampler piece.
Update: This piece was removed on 7/17/11. It was really starting to show a lot of wear. A new piece was installed in its place.

Project #6: A Thank-You Gift
Recently "Hello Lamp Post" got picked up by a blogger from the Colorado Springs Independent writing about their excitement that yarn bombing has finally made its way to the Springs. As a thank you I added a bit of seasonal color to the grounds of the Independent offices.
Installation date: 10/23/2010
Location: railing of the Colorado Springs Independent at Vermijo and Nevada, Colorado Springs, CO
Video tape used: Cinderella
Thanks again Kirsten!!!

Project #2: Lapis Lazuli
Installed 8/17/10
Located at the parking lot on Canon Ave., Manitou Springs, CO
Video tape used: Lethal Weapon
Concept: There's someone in Manitou Springs that goes by the tag Lapis Lazuli. I happen to love the stone, lapis lazuli, and thought I would pay homage to the tagger at one of his/her sites.
Update: no longer at this location. I drove past on 8/19/10 and it was gone.
The "Lapis Lazuli" tag on the sign has been painted over.

Project #1: The Floral Gate
Completed 8/14/10
Located on the corner of E. Van Buren St. and N. Logan Ave., Colorado Springs, CO
Video tapes used: Lethal Weapon, Rock Star, Howard's End, Legends of the Fall
Concept: I decided to try out the concept of yarn bombing on my own home first. Hubby teaches piano so the flower centers, stems and leaves are meant to look like 1/8th notes (it's subtle). We don't garden but we like flowers so I decided on a floral design.
